Business Lab

BUSINESS LAB

Business Lab is a seminar series for researchers at Malmö University who are interested in exploring the broader relevance and potential use of their research. The series offers structured approaches to reflecting on how research can be further developed in relation to stakeholders, applications, and societal contexts.

The sessions are designed to support early-stage thinking and are suitable whether you are working with an initial idea, an ongoing research project, or are simply curious about how your work may connect beyond academia.

Seminar themes

Each Business Lab series consists of four recurring sessions:

Seminar 1
Pathways – from research to application

Introduces structured ways of understanding how research may connect to users, partners, and potential areas of application.

Seminar 2
From research insight to value concept

Focuses on articulating and communicating the core idea of your research, including its relevance, potential use, and differentiation.

Seminar 3
Intellectual property as a strategic tool

Provides an overview of how intellectual property can be understood and approached in relation to research practices, publication, and collaboration.

Seminar 4
Early-stage funding for research ideas

Offers an introduction to the funding landscape and how different forms of support relate to the development of research-based ideas.

About the format

Business Lab is offered as a quarterly series of lunchtime seminars, each focusing on a specific aspect of developing and communicating research-based ideas. The seminars provide an introduction and shared framework for each topic. They are intended to be knowledge-building and accessible, rather than requiring prior experience in innovation or commercialisation.

You can choose to participate in the full series during a given quarter or attend the sessions that are most relevant to your current work.

Lunch will be provided as part of the seminar.

Between sessions

Between seminar sessions, you can access support* from Malmö University’s innovation office. This includes individual advisory meetings where you can discuss and further develop your idea, explore possible ways of testing and refining it, address questions related to intellectual property and receive guidance on different forms of funding

* The support is available to all researchers at Malmö University as part of the university’s innovation support, regardless of participation in Business Lab.
